Therefore the article, â€Å"The Happiness of Pursuit,† supports the fact that happiness is created by what someone buys and how it specifically relates to them, because â€Å"rich isn’t just better, it’s much better† (Kluger). Comparing rich as being much better rather than just better, truly shows how much certain people care about the amount of money that they have, and that the amount of money they have greatly effects how satisfied they are with the way that their life is going. Happiness can also be affected based off of one’s salary. It is proven through a Time Magazine article that increases in salaries as low as 10% can create more happiness in a person, because â€Å"every 10% rise in annual income moves people up the satisfaction ladder [†¦] whether they’re making $25,000 or $100,000† (Luscombe). By showing that no matter how much money one is making at a time, and that a 10% increase in income helps people move up the satisfaction ladder, people are realizing that no matter what the increase in amount may be, the more money people make, the happier they are. If someone is supercilious enough to say that rich is much better, not just better, it is apparent that monetary amounts effect how much happiness someone has, and the more money they have the happier they are. This is also proven by the fact that slight income increases of 10% or more make people move up the satisfaction ladder and as stated above, personal satisfaction is one of the main keys to acquiring happiness. Happiness can also be acquired through satisfying and comfortable living standards, which require money to achieve. There is an apparent relationship between money and happiness in everyone, no matter what their circumstances are, and they are based on comfort. According to Dunn and Norton from the article, â€Å"Don’t Indulge. Be Happy. , â€Å"it turns out there is a measureable connection between income and happiness; not surprisingly, people with a comfortable living standard are happier than people living in poverty. † Obviously people who live in comfortable living standards are happier than those living in poverty, but the difference between those in poverty and those who have comfortable living standards is money. By having the money to live in comfortable living standards, people are happier. Another thing that money does is buying the things that are necessary to achieve happiness, no matter who or what you are. When someone argues that they do not need money to be happy, they need to look at the big picture like stated in the article, â€Å"Happiness, Beyond the Data,† because it may be â€Å"true that money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy many necessary conditions of happiness: food, shelter, medicine, security† (Gutting). People are often found arguing that money can’t buy happiness, but in reality, money is needed to acquire happiness, because everyone needs some money if any in order to stay alive. If those Americans who claimed that they felt happy regardless of income were thrown into a lifestyle where they were making minimum wage struggling to feed their own families, they surely would no longer feel happy each day, which is why her argument is incomplete. By not knowing the circumstances of the Americans who believe that they would feel happy each day regardless of their income, it is not a valuable statistic. Yes, it may be possible that those people may be happy each day regardless whether they make millions of dollars or nothing, but it is very likely that the less money they make, the less satisfied they would be with their life, and in the end less happy. The melting of this sheet is significant because it acts as a linchpin for other glaciers and ice sheets in Antarctica that will, in turn, melt over time. Ultimately, the melting of the south polar ice cap will raise sea levels globally by as much as ten to thirteen feet, adding on to the sixty-nine  feet of sea level rise that scientists have already attributed to human activity.  A 2014 report by The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned  that we are underprepared for extreme climate events, as has been demonstrated by deadly heat waves, droughts, floods, cyclones, and wildfires. Yet, there is a troubling gap between the serious reality depicted by climate change science and the level of concern among the U.S. public. An April 2014 Gallup Poll  found that, while most U.S. adults view climate change as a problem, only 14 percent believe that the implications of climate change have reached a â€Å"crisis† level. A full third of the population believe that climate change is not a problem at all. Sociologist Riley Dunlap, who conducted the poll, also found that self-identified political liberals and moderates are far more concerned about the impacts of climate change than are conservatives. But, regardless of political inclinations, worry and action are two different things. Across the U.S., meaningful action in response to this harsh reality is scant. Research shows clearly that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmospherenow at an unprecedented 401.57  parts per millionis a direct result of the process of capitalist industrialization that has unfolded since the late 18th century. Climate change is a direct consequence of the widespread, now globalized, mass production and consumption of goods, and of the material construction of our habitat that has accompanied it. Yet, despite this reality, production and construction continue unabated. How Consumerism Shapes Our Impact on the Climate Its hard to accept that things need to change. As people who live in a society of consumers, who are steeped in consumerist way of life, we are socially, culturally, economically, and psychologically invested in this system. Our everyday life experiences, our relationships with friends and loved ones, our practices of leisure and amusement, and our personal goals and identities are all organized around practices of consumption. Many of us  measure our self-worth by how much money we make, and by the quantity, quality, and newness of stuff we are able to buy. Most of us, even if we are critically aware of the implications of production, consumption, and waste, can’t help but want more. We are inundated with advertising so clever that it now follows us around the internet and pushes notifications of sales to our smartphones while we shop. We are socialized to consume, and so, when it comes down to it, we don’t really want to respond to climate change. According to the Gallup poll, most of us are willing to acknowledge that it is a problem that must be addressed, but it seems that we expect someone else to do that work. Sure, some of us have made lifestyle adjustments, but how many of us are involved in forms of collective action and activism that work productively toward  social, political, and economic change? Most of us tell ourselves that achieving large-scale, long-term change is the work of the government or corporations, but not us. What Fighting Climate Change Really Means If we believed that a systemic response to climate change was an equally shared responsibility, was our responsibility, we would be responding to it. We would cast aside the mostly symbolic responses, given their marginal impact, of recycling, banning plastic shopping bags, swapping incandescent for halogen lightbulbs, purchasing â€Å"sustainable† and â€Å"green† consumer goods, and driving less. We would recognize that the solution to the dangers of global climate change cannot be found within the very system that has caused the problem. We would, instead, recognize that the system of capitalist production and consumption is the problem. We would renounce the values of this system, and foster new values oriented to sustainable living. Until we do that, we’re all climate change deniers. We may recognize that it exists, but most of us are not protesting in the streets. We might have made some modest adjustments to it, but we’re not giving up our consumer lifestyle. Most of us are in stark denial of our complicity in the changing climate. We are in denial of our responsibility to facilitate the necessary social, cultural, economic, and political changes that could begin to stem the tide of catastrophe. Child abuse is one of the most tragic problems in America today. Each year, over three million American children are beaten, neglected, or sexually abused by their parents or guardians. Infants only a few days old as well as teenagers are subject to child abuse. There are four types of child abuse: physical abuse, physical neglect, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. Child abuse is a serious problem that plagues America's youth and must be stopped.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Physical abuse is one form of child abuse. According to social agencies, beatings of children have multiplied over the past twenty years. Physical abuse is any abuse that is harmful to the child. This kind of abuse includes the physical discipline which results in observable injuries on the child. It also includes use of a life-threatening weapon, like a gun or a knife, against a child and any abuse resulting in death. Any abuse which results in a sever injury requiring prompt medical attention, that could be life threatening, that could cause mental and/or physical impairment, could cause disfigurement, or chronic pain is too classified as physical child abuse.
